How do I know who my instructor is? Hi! My name is Wilma Kime. I am looking forward to working with you this semester in a joint project so that you can learn the basics of human anatomy. I can be reached during the semester through e-mail (preferred), by telephone or by arranging a personal meeting in my office. My e-mail address is kime@lakemichigancollege.edu. My office is in C Wing at Napier campus, on the third floor C324-E. My campus telephone number is 269-927-8100 extension 5080. Who would be most likely to take the On Line Anatomy class instead of on campus? Any student that meets the course prerequisite is eligible to enroll. Persons who have work or personal commitments that do not easily fit with standard on-site class schedules are likely to be particularly interested. Not all students may be suited for On Line Anatomy. The structure and material to be covered requires more self-discipline and motivation. Students need to have basic computer technology skills and be pro-active. Questions and answers are primarily addressed on-line through e-mail. Whether you take this class on campus in a regular class format or on-line, your success depends on your ability to work diligently throughout the semester. Anatomy is like learning a new language, with emphasis on specific terminology applied to body systems. There is little repetition, rather a continual flow of new terms and application throughout the semester. Are the on campus sessions required? YES. Students are required to attend five testing sessions at the Napier campus sessions. Each session includes both a lecture and laboratory examination. You should not enroll for the On-Line class if you have a conflict with the Saturday testing dates. How is this course different from the Biology 205 offered on campus? In terms of the basic course structure, there is little difference. The course objectives are the same and students are expected to perform with the same level of focus and rigor. However, there are several important differences you need to be aware of. The "lecture" portion of the course has been produced on CDs that you are expected to use in conjunction with the textbook and lab manual. There are no regular lecture or lab sessions. You will be expected to follow the lecture and laboratory schedule. You are expected to perform laboratory assignments on your own, utilizing college facilities. I will work with you to make lab space and materials available on site according to your schedule. Lecture quizzes and laboratory quizzes will be taken on-line through Blackboard. Quizzes are timed and all students are expected to take them without using any reference materials (the same as students taking the class on campus). Five Saturday sessions are scheduled during the semester for lecture and laboratory testing. Is there a course orientation session? Not in the traditional sense. However, I would like to meet with you prior to the start of the Winter Semester to introduce myself, and go over the course components. Lecture and Laboratory CDs will be available to check out for semester use from the college library in August, 2005. The course CD’s MUST be returned to the library at the end of the semester. Tell me about using the CD’s? There are 6 disks, each disk contains specific course material--refer to the Course Schedule for textbook and lab manual chapter assignments Disk 1-- Introduction to the Course and Unit One (Chapters 2-5) Disk 2--Unit 2 (Chapters 6-9) Disk 3--Unit 3 (Chapters 11-13) Disk 4--Unit 4 (Chapters 14 & 15 only, see disk 6 for Chapter 16) Disk 5--Unit 5 (Chapters 17-21 Disk 6--Chapter 16 (Unit 4) Laboratory Assignments The program used to produce the CD’s in HTML format is supposed to be PC and Mac compatible. It has been tested using Windows. It is important that you use Microsoft Media Player as your default player. Check to see that another player, such as real one player, is not the default player. To download Media Player, go to the following URL www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9Series/download//download.asp If you have Media Player installed-- insert the disk with the content you want to study into your CD drive double click on My Computer and select the CD drive double click on the Html Export file folder search until you find the icon labeled "index.htm", double click on the icon to open the program click on the menu bar to view the table of contents click on the chapter topic you want to study when the blue screen appears, scroll down to the action buttons and select the play button. Course Procedure for each week: You will be expected to complete each of the Learning Objectives listed for Lecture and Lab. The Learning Objectives are included in the course Handouts and on Blackboard, Human Anatomy. To assist you in accomplishing the Learning Objectives, a narrated PowerPoint CD for each lecture unit and lab assignment will be available. In addition, these PowerPoint programs can be viewed in the Math/Science Computer Lab. Quizzes will be posted on Blackboard and should be taken not later than Sunday of the week assigned. The semester schedule for lecture and lab is included in the course Handouts and on Blackboard, Human Anatomy. Lecture and lab tests are combined and will be given at the Napier campus as scheduled.
